So, you know it's always interesting when you look around the area you grew up in and realize some of the very amusing, small town-y things that you've never done.

I spent this morning out at the 18th Annunal BBI Cardboard Boat Race. This is a big deal around here, mostly because of the really really big possibility of making a complete fool of yourself infront of hundreds of people from the county. I wish that I'd remembered to take my camera, because I can't really describe the event as much as pictures can. We had the service races, which include things like law enforcement and that ilk - you'd really think that the Coast Guard could build a better boat than they did. They totally lost to the crab cops (Department of Natural Resources). Although, according to a friend of mine who works at Oxford Lab/NOAA, the Coast Guard didn't being building their boat until Thursday because they totally forgot, and you know, they're the Coast Guard so they should build a boat *lol*

One of the best competitions is the funny boat competition because that one gives the prize for the most amusing boat. And the winner - at least should be cause I had to leave before the awards were given out - should be the Navy. They build a cardboard replica of an aircraft carrier, complete with their five member crew in their vests and goggles and earmuff things. I mean, complete gear as they paddled. And there were airplanes glued to the runway. It was awesome. I had to go up and talk to those guys after they raced because, seriously, so much laughter for that.

I want to build one for next year. I'm much handier than people give me credit for. But I can't decide if I want to convince my friends to build one for speed, or to build a replica of the Sultana so that we can win for most amusing. Because honestly, who wouldn't love to see a cardboard tall ship?

The best way I can describe this... for people who watch Gilmore Girls, it's a very Stars Hollow type event. Very Stars Hollow *lol*

That's just about the coolest event ever! LOL. I can't believe the Coast Guard would lose. That aircraft carrier sounds priceless. And you need to make a cardboard tall ship. It would be so worth it.

I'm already finagling some friends into doing it. I think they think I'm completely insane, but what could be more fun than doing something where the purpose is to make a fool out of yourself for a good cause?

Yeah, the boys on the Coast Guard boat were too busy realizing that 'hey, maybe it wasn't a good idea to wait until the last minute to build our boat!' to be too concerned with winning. I was kinda dissapointed that none of the local police departments made a boat because those are priceless. There's a reason they are car/bike cops and not boat cops *lol*
